Removing Brown Spots in Darker Skin Types

January 24th, 2014

Removing brown spots can be a challenge for patients with darker skin types. If treated too aggressively, the patient could be left with a darker spot, or hyperpigmentation. It’s crucial for someone with a darker skin type to be seen by a professional who is experienced with all skin types.

In our office, we offer two treatments that are safe and effective at treating photodamage, and even acne scars, for patients with a more olive complexion:

Alexandrite laser with chemical peel
Individual brown spots are treated with the Alexandrite laser. A chemical peel is then applied to the area the further lighten the brown spots and to give an even skin tone. Patients notice a significant improvement in as little as one treatment.

Colder Weather, Drier Skin

November 16th, 2013

As the weather gets colder and we kick the heaters on, you may notice your skin feels drier, itchy and may even become cracked and irritated. It’s that time of year again for winter eczema.

Winter eczema can develop out of the blue, and commonly affects areas such as the hands, inside of the elbows, or back of the knees, but is not just limited to those areas. Typically, we prescribe a topical steroid cream as well as a barrier repair cream.

Here are some other helpful hints for avoiding the winter itch:
*Avoid prolonged soaks in water
*Opt for warm, quick showers as opposed to lengthy, scalding hot showers
*Pat dry and try to apply moisturizer before leaving the humidity of the restroom
*Apply moisturizer often, especially after washing hands, to keep skin moisturized
