Botulinum toxin + hyaluronic acid filler = longer lasting results

October 9th, 2009

What do you get when you have botulinum toxin(Botox or Dysport) in combination with hyaluronic acid filler(Juvederm or Restylane)- longer lasting results!  Thats according to a recent report in Medscape(10/7, Melville).  Research presented at a dermatology meeting showed “botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid fillers, when used in combination in the lower face and perioral region, provide better and durable cosmetic results than either modality used on its own.“  Researchers came to this conclusion by taking 90 patients and splitting them into three groups: those treated with botulinum toxin, those treated with hyaluronic acid filler, and those treated with both.  The patients who received either botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid filler received one touch up during the study.  Even with the touch up, the patients who received the combination treatment fared better.  After six months, all 90 patients were evaluated again and found patients receiving combination therapy received the highest scores, and longevity and durability of the filler was improved when combined with botulinum toxin.”

New research links mental distress and acne

September 23rd, 2009

For some teens, back to school time can cause anxiety… and according to new research, that anxiety may be linked to acne.   Time (9/17, Cloud) published a study from the journal BMC Public Health that found mental distress in teens “may be worsening the condition of their skin.”  The study consisted of  over 3,000 students, who were 18 and 19 years old.  The study showed:

“the level of mental distress kids reported was strongly associated with how much acne they said they had, independent of other factors… roughly 19 percent of all kids who reported symptoms of anxiety and depression said they had acne, compared with only 12 percent of those who reported no mental distress.”

Certain skin types more likely to have rosacea

September 16th, 2009

rosaceaAccording to a report on Medwire news (Factors involved in pathogenesis rosacea revealed; By Helen Albert 11 September 2009 J Eur Acad ), certain individuals are more susceptible to rosacea then others, based on their skin type.

Rosacea is a chronic condition that causes redness and swelling of the face, although it can also affect other areas, like the eyes (ocular rosacea).  Those afflicted with rosacea may first notice a tendency to flush or blush easily. The condition progresses to persistent redness, pimples, and visible, threadlike blood vessels (telangiectasias) in the center of the face.  These skin changes can eventually spread to the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose.  -Derm SD website: medical dermatology

According to MedWire News, the study shows that “key factors in the pathogenesis of rosacea include having a paler skin type, [and] chronic sun exposure.”

Interestingly, the study also found that “until the age of 71 years of age 70% more women had rosacea than men, but in those aged 71 years and above 60% more men than women had the condition, suggesting that men may develop the disease at an older age.”

Even with these new findings, “Many aspects of rosacea require further investigation and more future studies are needed…”  However, while there is no way to completely get rid of rosacea, it can be maintained with topicals and/or laser treatments, such as V Beam.  To learn more about laser treatment of rosacea, please follow the link: V Beam laser information

How many of us hold on to cosmetic products for months, even years… far longer than their expiration date.  The UK’s Daily Mail reported recently that a survey (by Mintel) showed that “three out of four women may be ‘putting their health at risk by using old cosmetics for several years, even if they begin to smell’ or change color.”  This practice can be especially dangerous when it comes to products intended for use around the eye, such mascaras or cosmeceutical eye creams.  Dr. Chris Flower, of the UK’s Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association, said that “eye-area cosmetics can become infected and cause problems for the eyes.”
