New research links mental distress and acne

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

For some teens, back to school time can cause anxiety… and according to new research, that anxiety may be linked to acne.   Time (9/17, Cloud) published a study from the journal BMC Public Health that found mental distress in teens “may be worsening the condition of their skin.”  The study consisted of  over 3,000 students, who were 18 and 19 years old.  The study showed:

“the level of mental distress kids reported was strongly associated with how much acne they said they had, independent of other factors… roughly 19 percent of all kids who reported symptoms of anxiety and depression said they had acne, compared with only 12 percent of those who reported no mental distress.”

How many of us hold on to cosmetic products for months, even years… far longer than their expiration date.  The UK’s Daily Mail reported recently that a survey (by Mintel) showed that “three out of four women may be ‘putting their health at risk by using old cosmetics for several years, even if they begin to smell’ or change color.”  This practice can be especially dangerous when it comes to products intended for use around the eye, such mascaras or cosmeceutical eye creams.  Dr. Chris Flower, of the UK’s Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association, said that “eye-area cosmetics can become infected and cause problems for the eyes.”

Before

Before

42 year old white female came to the office complaining of sun damaged skin on her chest.  Pt has had numerous sunburns in the past on her chest and rarely wears sunscreen in this area. She has not had any previous treatments on her chest.
I treated the patient with a fractionated laser device as well as the alexandrite laser for individual brown spots and a pulsed dye laser (Vbeam) for background redness and telangiectasias “broken blood vessels”.  The patient underwent two treatment sessions about a month apart utilizing all 3 lasers at each visit.  She had an excellent result and now maintains her appearance through the use of topical anti-aging products (Remedy by Derm SD) and daily sunscreen.
The patient was very pleased with her result.

What you need to know about Radiesse®

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Radiesse® is the ONLY dermal filler that has received FDA approval to mix with lidocaine anesthetic, which means a more pleasant experience for the patient.  This mixing method was first described in the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery (June 2008), where researchers found in a 50 patient trial that mixing lidocaine with Radiesse, versus Radiesse alone, was found to be much less painful in 100% of patients.  Radiesse® can be used to diminish the appearance of lines on the face, and it’s also effective in giving your cheeks definition and rejuvenating hands.  Follow this link to our cosmetic dermatology page to see before and after pictures and to learn more:  Soft Tissue Fillers Information
